The Griggs Timeline

Much of this I have from observing. Some of it is inferred from actual correspondence with the faux-Griggs.

The original editor had 2 pages: her "professional" page (J.d. Griggs [sic]) and another FB page for personal stuff (Judith Griggs). They both originally had her picture on the profile and were somewhat loose as to amount of info a non-friend could see. As the day wore on, the woman changed her profile pictures to country-ish pictures of strawberries and quilts and locked down tightly the amount of info available. Finally, she fled entirely and both her legitimate FB pages went away. At NO time did either of these entities directly post or acknowledge the debacle.

At some point in early/mid-afternoon, someone (who I call Ted for a decent reason) created a faux Facebook entity called Judith Griggs (since, obviously, FB has to allow multiple people with the same name). His original profile pic was a plate of pink cookies. As the afternoon wore on, he changed the profile pic to her picture. At around this same time, he figured out how to crack the Fan Page and posted a bogus status calculated to irritate people. He then began posting inflammatory posts/responses on the Cooks Source page, but several times he broke character. Because of the rapid postings on the page, you really had to be paying attention (and for some stupid reason I found this fascinating) to catch all this.

Later in the afternoon, it seems he finally has had the chutzpah to start posting as Cooks Source Magazine.

By now, most people seem to have lost track of the genuine severity, lack of ethics, lack of knowledge and sheer gall of the original situation.

The woman has fled. Her site has gone. Her advertisers have pulled away from her.

The fact that this has by now has almost completely degenerated into sport and people trying to either be "witty" or gross and only for the benefit of themselves since she will not be seeing it is more than reason enough for this page to cease. And, it is being egged on by a Griggs-person who has nothing to do with anything except to be a flame-fanner.

I hate the fact that FB will not let you see everything you've done. I had a couple of chats with the fauux-Griggs in which (s)he smugly did not deny responsibility (probably just as well for him).

You've probably seen this, but this is the original excerpt that Monica posted on her LiveJournal page (highlighting mine...if it works in comments):

"Yes Monica, I have been doing this for 3 decades, having been an editor at The Voice, Housitonic Home and Connecticut Woman Magazine. I do know about copyright laws. It was "my bad", indeed, and, as the magazine is put together in long sessions, tired eyes and minds somethings forget to do these things.
But honestly Monica, the web is considered "public domain" and you should be happy we just didn't "lift" your whole article and put someone else's name on it! It happens a lot, clearly more than you are aware of, especially on college campuses, and the workplace. If you took offence and are unhappy, I am sorry, but you as a professional should know that the article we used written by you was in very bad need of editing, and is much better now than was originally. Now it will work well for your portfolio. For that reason, I have a bit of a difficult time with your requests for monetary gain, albeit for such a fine (and very wealthy!) institution. We put some time into rewrites, you should compensate me! I never charge young writers for advice or rewriting poorly written pieces, and have many who write for me... ALWAYS for free!"

Where are the multiple posts from Cooks Source? I only see one.

I don't think that you have any evidence it's *not* a real post.

Not that it really matters.

I agree with you that the new posts on the Cooks Source page are fishy. I watched, as you did, the progression of the real Judith Griggs' pages from open into lockdown, and then I saw the new, fake profile pop up. Both Cooks Source page and this profile seem to break character often. Smells like troll.

Virtualbri - I am perfectly willing to admit that that may be true. But at the point I saw the CSM posting I was pretty fed up with the whole thing and getting ready to close my facebook.

Do I have absolute proof? No. Am I completely convinced to by admittedly strong circumstantial evidence and of hours of reading and researching that every post that purported to come from the grigs woman was indeed posted by a hacker/troll? Absolutely.

Actually, virtualbri, I take back, partially, my acknowledgement of your statement.

The Cooks Source Magazine posting(s) I was referring to were NOT the status at the top of the page. As I was getting tired of the whole thing and getting ready to close my FB tab, I saw at least one comment from "Cooks Source Magazine" that had a similar tone to the Faux-Griggs/CSM status.

Rather than be sane and go to sleep, I have looked into this a (very) little more and find that there is now a faux-CSM fan page which looks substantially like the original (having, ironically, copied most of the content from the original). There are little things like the photos page and some of the comments that give its nature away.

I don't know how fan pages work, but I would imagine that if Fan Page Cooks Source magazine (the fake) were to make comment(s) on the original page, they would appear to come from Cooks Source Page BUT not appear in the filter since they did not originate from the original's page-owner.

I am going to say, based on the amount of chaos that the fake accounts are creating, I believe the rather smug status update on the real Cooks Source, which reads:

"Hi Folks!

Well, here I am with egg on my face! I did apologise to Monica via email, but aparently it wasnt enough for her. To all of you, thank you for your interest in Cooks Source and Again, to Monica, I am sorry -- my bad!
You did find a way to get your "pound of flesh..." we used to have 110 "friends," we now have 1,870... wow!

Best to all, Judith"

and which has stood for 16 hours at this point, is indeed a real post from her. Had the account been hacked, I believe there would have been a LOT more asshattery going on. People who have FB accounts are rarely that subtle and good at roleplaying.

First let me say that I am seeing some people say thanks to my posting they are not sure if the debacle was real. The original situation with monica and the email from judith griggs was absolutely real and deserved every bit of outrage that it got.

My contention is that the status that was posted on the cooks source magazine facebook account purportedly from judith griggs was actually a hack by a clever troll who went on to create the original faux-griggs account and then went forth to further flame the flames that were stirred up by that message. For a long time his was the only fake account. After she had closed her real accounts, his still existed.

No. That's not how fan pages work. I administer multiple fan pages for clients and if you are posting on a page that you do NOT administer, you will appear as your personal profile. You could probably create a personal profile with the same picture and the name Cooks Source and have it appear as if it were CSM, but it would be easy to tell it was a personal profile rather than the actual page administrator if someone clicked on it.

Ah. Thanks. I am a reluctant rather than avid Facebook user and know enough to get by intelligently.

It is possible that it was a personal page created before it was recreated as a faux fan page. As I said by then I was tired of the whole rigamarole. And, in order to know one way or another, as you say one would have had to click the name and most people were, by this point, working on gut reaction.

I'm not a usual poster, but I found this topic facsinating. I took a look at the Cooks Source Facebook and actually you can tell when the legitimate posts end and the fake ones start.

The last legitimate post was the one saying: "Well, here I am with egg on my face!..." After that, no more legitimate Cooks Source posts were made.

If you go to the Wall on that Facebook page, click on the "filter" link and select "just Cooks Source Magazine", you'll see only the legitimate posts originating from this fan page. They go back quite a ways and then stop with the "egg on my face" post.

So I suspect it's a mix of both. The mag did post one more silly comment which further fanned the flames, but anything after this particular post is most likely fake.

Who cares? What this editor and this magazine have done is outrageous and every bit of grief and shame that has been thrown to them is well deserved...
